THE NEW YEAR’S ANTHEM 2008
Semtex played it first. I played it second. Then Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and Pete Tong played it. I loved it so much, I made it my Jam Hot in March ’08 (check my myspace for proof if you don’t believe me) and also got the Crookers (the Italian producers responsible for this remix) to drop a guest mix on my show.
It blew up over the summer mainly in Malia and it’s now the biggest record in clubland at the moment and is released on 12th January (shouts to Ministry of Sound – good signing, good timing).
Even with the initial CuDi led controversy over the video (he basically went on his myspace and ranted that it was shizer…and then posted it on his myspace video channel) it’s a rare record as it completely crosses the genre boundaries: you can play this in any club and people will lose their mind. It completely merges the boundaries between dance and black music which I think is going to be the way forward in 2009.
KiD CuDi is definitely one to watch in 2009 and it’s not just me saying it - he’s ended up on the BBC Sound of 2009 list off the strength of this track, his work with Kanye on his “808 and Heartbreak” album and his mixtape “A Kid Named CuDi”. ’09 should be a big year for him…if only he answered my emails now as he did back in March/April!
I will be bringing in the new year skanking to this bassline with my fianceé, her sisters, my dog and a large margherita. In the street. In my coat. At, at, at night…
