Virus Syndicate: Your Life

By Sam Moir
Manchester based grime collective, Virus Syndicate are back with their latest release.
The group, consisting of DJ Mark One and MCs Goldfinger, JSD and Nika D make their debut on new label Safe & Sound with Your Life.
Nika D tells us about the release.
Your Life is pretty different to some of your other releases, how did it come about?
Your life began as production with Mowgli. We wanted to do something a bit quirky and light hearted and just have fun with it.
The first version of the track had this crazy comedic vibe to it which kind of brought about the concept and lyrics
What journey did the track take from initial ideas to the final version?
The original mix was with Mowgli which was very different to our usual stuff, so after a couple of meetings with the label we decided to get another version of the track produced that was more in keeping with the sound that Virus Syndicate are known for.
Hence Starkey’s production but why him?
Starkey is an amazing producer and a good mate of ours so he was someone who we thought of first for getting involved with the Your Life project especially as we have worked with him previously.
What do you hope to achieve from the release?
The main aim for this release is to show a different side to Virus Syndicate.
People often expect a dark sound from us but we wanted to do something more light-hearted and funny.
We want the track to have mainstream appeal but without loosing its authenticity and I feel we have found a nice balance.
Hopefully the track will grow to be huge, but as long as the people that get behind it enjoy, it we are happy however many that is
What’s next for Virus Syndicate?
We’ve got a couple of massive projects in the pipeline but I don’t want to say too much about that right now so hold tight.
Your Life is released 29 May on Safe & Sound Records with the original mix from Mowgli and remixes from Funkystepz and Heavyfeet.
