Interview: TC

Bass producer TC is back new material so Sam Moir caught up with him for a chat about his latest release, working on his new label and what the future holds for the Bristol based producer.

First of all, what have you been up to lately?

I have been touring loads, and just came back from Vegas for EDC, a crazy place! I’ve been in the studio loads too and working on a few different projects such as a TC album for next year which is pretty much done and some production work for some up and coming artists.

Why did you decide to create your own label?

I decided to create Don’t Play because I want an outlet for my music that I control from start to finish. I am really passionate about the sound and look of my records and I know I am ready to push things my way. It’s really exciting to learn about the whole process from start to finnish.

What was the thinking behind having two different styles on the release?

The two styles on one release is just the way that the tracks with Dread MC turned out. I have been playing the instrumental of Burning Starlight for a long time and when I played it to Dread he was really into it so we sat and wrote the vocal and it turned out to be sick.

How was working with Dread MC?

Dread has a great tone to his voice and the ability to break out of that MC box to write words that mean more than ‘make some noise’ or ‘I’m the best on the mic’. I love it when an MC can write lyrics to make you think and perhaps they don’t make sense to you right away but you can bring your own meaning to them. When I work with an artist I want them to write about things that mean something to them. I want Don’t Play to be a label for music that really has heart and not just trying to write hits for radio.

How did the collaboration come around?

Me and Dread MC have known each other for a long while, He is from the west country and now lives in Bristol. Concrete and Burning Starlight are the first tracks we have done together so he is definitely not the kind of artist you have to make 20 tunes with to get 2 you are happy with.

What do you make of the DJ and radio support?

I feel blessed that Mistajam, Benga, Skream and others think that the tunes are worthy of radio play. Both Concrete and Burning Starlight are definitely working in club land in my sets.

What’s next for you?

Concrete and Burning Starlight is realeased on 27th July 2011 and I’m looking to release an album next year. It’s been too long since the last. But the next releases on Don’t Play are Tap Ho and Don’t Play.
