*Jam Hot image kindly pillaged from a lovely company in Glasgow called Jam Hot who have been operating since 2008 so could have possibly got inspiration for their company name from the name of this feature. But probably not. They’ve got nothing to do with me but they do seem lovely. Their website is here if you’re looking for some quality Scottish design!

Interview: Yasmin

by Sam Moir

Yasmin kicks off 2012 with the Shy FX-produced Light Up (The World). This year will also see her release her debut album.

MistaJam.com’s Sam Moir caught up with her to chat about her career to date and what this year has in store.

What do you make of the support you’ve received early on in your career?

It’s been fantastic. I’ve been lucky enough to DJ for Pharrell and N*E*R*D. They’re people who I admire and some of the best producers of my generation so that’s really flattering. Then there’s DJs like MistaJam and Annie Mac who have fantastic taste in music. They’re real musos and play some great music – for them to support me as well is just an honour.

How are you splitting your time between DJing and production?

A lot of DJs get the urge to create their own music. It just comes from knowledge of music and a lot of tracks and styles to reference from. I’m pretty good at keeping both up. Making music takes a lot of time and a lot of dedication and I can have club residencies. I always make the time to do DJ gigs because it keeps me hungry and keeps me passionate. It’s something that I really enjoy doing.

How’s the album coming on?

The album’s coming on really well – the last year has been a real learning process and evolution of myself. I’m writing much better songs now I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of exciting people. For me, it’s about mixing great songs with really interesting production. Songwise, my style is very melodic and catchy. I try and tell a story – I’m not one of those people who use metaphors and analogies. It’s all real life. It’s a long process but I’m very adamant to get it right and say what I want to say with this album. It takes time but we’re getting there.

Where would you say it’s influenced from?

I reflect on things that make sense to me. For me, it’s a lot of 90s influences, a lot of reverb, there’s dub and reggae influences on the album, nothing too heavily electronic. It’s got an organic feel to it. A lot of the album’s inspiration is taken from tracks in the 90s era and lyrically, it’s very honest.

You’ve collaborated with Ms Dynamite on Light Up, how features heavy will the album be?

I’ve only done one collaboration with Ms Dynamite so far and I think I’m going to keep it minimal on the features. I want to showcase myself – I’m friends with a lot of people in the music industry and I could probably get a million features if I wanted them. But it’s important for me to stand alone and off the back of my own work. I always want to collaborate with other artists and work with other people, but there’s plenty of time to do that in the future.

Throughout the album process, so far, how would you say you’ve developed as an artist?

More in my songwriting – I never studied music and I wasn’t particularly great at English. My skills as a songwriter are naturally one of the most important things for me – to be recognised as a good writer. I also really want to learn guitar.

Where do you see yourself going with this album?

That’s up to the people who listen to it. Personally, I want this album to travel across the world and I want people all over the world to hear it and connect with it and I want it to allow me to get on the road, tour and bring the music live to people. If it does that, then I’m happy.

By the end of 2012, what are you looking to achieve?

Get the album out and I’d love to do my own headline tour. I’m speaking about other projects at the moment like visual and TV documentaries. I really want to get hands on with my upcoming videos.

Radio: MistaJam & DJ Selyom

by admin

Last night saw two worlds collide when I co-hosted my usual Xtra Dubstep Xtra Bass show with Radio 1′s breakfast show king Chris Moyles. Was great working with Chris again, last time was during his marathon show for Comic Relief.

Musically it was kept to what I normally do on a Saturday night but with a slight Moyles (who we re-christened DJ Selyom) twist. For the first time in 16 years at Radio 1, Moyles got behind the decks and delivered a 20 minute Dubstep and Grime mix. I can vouch for Chris as I was there in the studio – there was no studio or computer trickery involved: one man, 2 CDJ’s, a mixer, a pair of headphones and 2 CD’s filled with Dubstep and Grime tracks that weren’t altered in any way!

You can check out the full show here also including Jacob Plant Behind the Beats and Guest mix and a whole host of big tunes.

The MistaJam Marka Translation

by admin

The biggest Underground record of the moment and also the first record I played in 2012 was this anthem – ‘Marka’ by Skeptical & Dub Phizix featuring Broke N £nglish’s Strategy. Finding favour with every Drum & Bass, Bass music and Underground music DJ worth their salt, it’s also a former Jam Hot. However a recurring question whenever I’ve played it on the radio though from those who aren’t as well versed in broken english (see what I did there) or Jamcunian Patois is “…what the hell did he say?” – well, never fear as I’ve taken the time to transcribe and translate the lyrics to Marka for you right here:

Stinking of issy miyake dark rum and the marijuana

At the moment, I smell of a heady blend of Issy Miyake aftershave mixed with the Dark rum and Marijuana I’ve been consuming. It’s quite a potent mix.

Step inna mi lake and swim with the piranha

Metaphorically speaking, I’m so tough that if I had a lake and you were to step into it, you would find it full of Piranhas, which as you know are very dangerous fish and would most likely eat you.

Anytime mi drop mi go put down a marka

Whenever I’m about to drop something, whether it be a lyric or a heavy beat; I’m going to put down a marker so that you’re able to see where it came from.

If it nuh money say whe dem bother talk for?

If you’re going to ask me to perform or ‘drop a marka’ and you’re not considering paying me money for it, why are you talking to me at all? I am a professional wordsmith and expect to be paid for my work.

Dem a try fi hold up a bank wid a banana

Those kind of people I aforementioned are so silly, they’re the kind of person who would try to rob a bank armed with only a piece of fruit rather than a weapon.

Yeah we pree the whole ting panorama

Yes, indeed we watched the whole thing happen and found it as informative as that award winning BBC current affairs show Panorama.

Whole heap a gun talk they don’t really want no drama

Those silly people I mentioned before pretend to be hardcore by mentioning that they have guns but I bet that if push came to shove, they wouldn’t want to cause any disruption or drama so to speak.

We a kill dem a bloodclaat gain

In a soundclash against those fools, we will lyrically decimate them exactly as we have done before. In fact, I’m getting tired of lyrically decimating them. How many times must we do this?!

Got the tings on lock down again

Once more, we have secured our lyrical and musical arsenal for our soundclash combat.

Them a tek ten shots in again

In fact we have 10 hard hitting items to fire at them during our soundclash. These items are so hard hitting, they’re akin to shots fired from a gun.

Dem pon a old pan sound dem again

The technical capabilities of their musical set up leave a lot to be desired.

Man a gash dem and light them again

With reference to the 2006 reggae anthem by Chuck Fender ‘Gash Dem and Light Dem’, we’re going to fight against their negativity and purify their stupidity with our lyrical and musical fire!

Becaa me nah hyping again

Last time we faced each other, I got excited about the prospect. This time, it’s business.

Man are ready fi di war, when it comes on top, ‘ca me nah feel frightened again

We are ready for this soundclash when the time comes and although last time it happened, I felt nervous energy; this time I don’t.

Hope that helps you enjoy the record!

Free Music: Phlo Finister – Crown Gold EP

by admin

First off, Happy New Year! Hope 2012 brings you all you deserve. Right now, you deserve some good free music and this nugget of R&B goodness comes courtesy of Singer stroke model aka Youthquaker Phlo Finister.

From Oakland California but currently residing in Hollywood, she’s got something Aaliyah-ish about her. Rather than running from the comparison, Phlo is embracing it, especially in this, the video for Shades, where she pays homage to Baby Girl:

Taken from the EP, Crown Gold, it’s definitely worth your bandwidth. Have a listen if you don’t believe me:
